Over 177,000 electricity consumers switched to Hidroelectrica in the first half of the year. Currently, the company serves 768,836 customers, a 30% increase in the first semester, according to the company’s financial reports. Since July 1st, the electricity market has been fully liberalized, and Hidroelectrica is the provider with the lowest price. On the other hand, their own energy production was lower, forcing the company to buy energy from the market to fulfill contracts.

From January 1st to June 30th, Hidroelectrica gained over 177,000 new customers, predominantly households.

Businesses also migrated to this supplier; the number of business clients increased by 50%, from 25,592 to 38,077.

  • „On June 30, 2025, the supply portfolio included 768,836 consumption points, registering a 30% increase compared to the same date last year, when it was 590,898 consumption points. This 177,938 consumption point increase reflects both the significant attraction of new domestic customers, as well as a marked expansion in the non-domestic segment.”
  • The trend has been driven by the announcement regarding the removal of energy price caps from July 1, 2025, which heightened customer interest in switching suppliers before the price caps expired.
  • This context supported customer migration with visible effects in both market segments, but with a faster pace in the non-domestic segment, where the cost optimisation decision is quicker and more directly influenced by market conditions,” explained the company’s representatives.

Hidroelectrica’s energy production decreased by 27% in the first half of 2025

On the other hand, Hidroelectrica’s net profit decreased by 41% in the first half compared to the same period last year, to 1.587 billion lei, mainly due to lower electricity production.

Consequently, Hidroelectrica had to procure more expensive electricity from the market to meet its contractual obligations.

  • „The challenging operational context, marked by unfavorable hydrological conditions, led to a 27% decrease in net electricity production compared to the same period last year.”
  • Recovery in Q2 2025 was mainly based on purchasing energy from the market.
  • These two major trends – reduced own production amid severe drought and increased energy purchases from the market – represent the defining context for the transformation: from a model built almost exclusively on in-house hydro production, the company is evolving towards an integration and supply profile, combining internal production with growing volumes acquired from the market to sustain delivery developments and a competitive position as a supplier,” the company’s report indicates.
